Jakarta – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has been deemed successful in his 10 years of leadership based on the Social Progress Index (SPI) from an international organization.
The index is measured by the Social Progress Imperative, a non-profit organization aimed at enhancing human well-being by providing comprehensive measurements of a country’s social performance.
“This organization is reputable and has worked with various renowned institutions, such as Deloitte and the World Economic Forum,” said Denny JA in his statement on Monday (30/9).
SPI measures social progress including various indicators such as basic human needs, well-being, and opportunities. SPI was first measured in 2014, in 163 countries, providing an important non-economic perspective in assessing a nation’s progress.
In 2014, Indonesia had a score of 61.65 and ranked 92nd in the world. Meanwhile, in 2023, the score increased to 67.22, and the ranking rose to 80.
“This increase indicates an improvement in social welfare during Jokowi’s leadership,” he said.
Additionally, the SPI index is also a tool for assessing social welfare beyond economic indicators, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“SPI is important because it evaluates the extent to which a country meets the basic human needs, promotes well-being, and creates opportunities for its population,” explained Denny JA.
“In other words, SPI provides a more comprehensive picture of the quality of life of the people than simply looking at economic growth,” he added.
In conclusion, based on the SPI index, during Jokowi’s 10 years in office, Indonesia has successfully improved social welfare as evidenced by the increase in the Social Progress Index score.
SPI reflects that Jokowi’s government has made significant progress in meeting the basic needs of the people, expanding access to education and health, and increasing economic opportunities.
Although there are still challenges to be faced, especially in terms of equality and environmental protection, the increase in Indonesia’s SPI ranking and score indicates that Indonesia is on the right track to improving social welfare.
“Based on the SPI, Jokowi’s 10 years can be categorized as successful, with the note that further efforts are needed to achieve social equality and justice throughout the Indonesian regions,” he concluded. (RR)
