RAKYATBENTENG.BACAKORAN.CO – The Expert Staff of the Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Hamdan Hamedan, responded to the emergence of pros and cons regarding the empowerment of the Indonesian diaspora abroad. According to him, the presence of the diaspora abroad is very important for Indonesia.
Hamdan conveyed this during a discussion on the role and empowerment of the diaspora for Indonesia’s Foreign Policy held by the Political Science Laboratory of Bakrie University on Wednesday (May 22, 2024).
The discussion was attended by three speakers, namely; Muhsin Syihab (Expert Staff of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Inter-Institutional Relations), and Muhammad Badaruddin (Lecturer in Political Science at Bakrie University).
The discussion was moderated by Yeyen Rostiani (Media Practitioner / Lecturer in Political Science at Bakrie University). During the event, the speakers agreed on the importance of the diaspora abroad for the country.
However, to optimize the empowerment and role of the Indonesian diaspora abroad for development in Indonesia, there are still challenges to be faced.
“Currently, there are pros and cons and a lack of literacy about the diaspora in Indonesia,” emphasized Hamdan when discussing the challenges of empowering the Diaspora in Indonesia.
Hamdan also mentioned that another challenge is the lack of connections between the Indonesian diaspora and the homeland.
“Another thing is that the Diaspora should be seen as a bridge connecting the Indonesian nation with the international arena,” emphasized Muhammad Badaruddin.
He believes that the perspective on the Indonesian diaspora should gradually change. In another context, Muhsin Syihab emphasized the importance of the diaspora’s role, including providing remittance contributions of around Rp 200 trillion, making them worthy of being called foreign exchange heroes.
“The diaspora is the nation’s asset, it must be treated well, so that they are not afraid to return and build Indonesia,” he concluded.
This discussion was attended by students, lecturers at the Political Science Department of Bakrie University located in the Epicentrum area, Kuningan, Jakarta, and ended with a Q&A session.
